In a few short hours, the University of Washington Huskies kickoff their 2015 season with a short plane ride to Boise, Idaho. Chris Petersen begins his 2nd year as UW Head Coach, oddly enough, against his former school, Boise State. Petersen notched an astonishing 92-12 during his 8 season at the helm of the Broncos. I vividly remember his upset win in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl over the Adrian Peterson led Oklahoma Sooners. That was one of the greatest college football games I have ever witnessed.
I’m curious to see how the Broncos faithful react to Petersen’s return to Boise as an opposing coach. He has the best winning percentage (.885) in the history of their football program, so I would assume a warm reception will be waiting for him but I know how fickle fans are. If you aren’t the coach at their school, they don’t care about you regardless of your prior accomplishments, especially in the bubble of college athletics, where coaches move from one school to another quite frequently.
In the end, I hope Coach Petersen will be able to enjoy a moment either before or after the game standing on the distinctive blue turf of the Broncos field and have the ability to reflect on his experiences while at Boise. He took a relatively unheard-of program to uncharted height’s and brought them into the national spotlight. The amount of success, both on and off the field, is unparalleled. After that reflective moment, I want Chris Petersen to shut the door on that part of his life because he is the University of Washington coach. I want the purple and gold, not the blue and orange, to consume him from that point forward. I want him 110% committed to being a Dawg. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe Chris Petersen is the man to rebuild Husky football back into the powerhouse it once was.
