Tonight Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment company is having a draft. Both weekly live television shows, Raw & Smackdown, will be selecting superstars to build their respective rosters. Raw will be overseen by Vince’s daughter, Stephanie McMahon, with the GM being the great and totally insane Mick Foley. Smackdown will be run by Vince’s son, Shane McMahon, and his GM will be Aberdeen’s own Daniel Bryan.
The official draft rules are as followed:
- Raw has the first overall pick
- Since SmackDown Live is a two-hour show and Raw is three hours, for every two picks SmackDown Live receives, Raw will receive three picks
- Tag teams count as one pick unless a Commissioner/General Manager specifically only wants one member of the team
- Six draft picks will be made off the NXT roster
I’m not going to choose wrestlers and put them on a specific show, but rather rank the 10 I would most like to build a show around. I am not going to rank John Cena, The Undertake & Brock Lesnar because, even though they are gigantic stars, they are part-time wrestlers who only show up for the big PPV’s; Summerslam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania.
- Seth Rollins-He has the complete package and will be at the top of the company for many years to come. He’s already one of the best on the mic and his in-ring skill set is entertaining for wrestling fans, as well as non-wrestling fans. Plus, he has one of the coolest nicknames, Crossfit Jesus.
- Kevin Owens-I believe he is the best pure wrestler in the company. Go watch his performance in the “Money in the Bank” match last PPV. He takes one of the nastiest ‘bumps’ I’ve ever seen, and was still able to wrestle the next night. Plus, his improvisation skills are second to none.
- Dean Ambrose (WWE Champion)-It feels funny ranking the current champion this far down. As a character, Ambrose is one of the most entertaining and the crowd loves him. He’s a gritty wrestler and a brawler, who will consistently get beat down but always gets back up.
- Sasha Banks-Women in wrestling have long been overlooked, but the “Divas Revolution” is changing that. The sensational triple threat match between Banks, Charoltte & Becky Lynch at Wrestlemania 32 planted the spotlight firmly on these ladies wrestling skills, as oppose to their looks. When Raw was in Seattle a few months ago, Banks was one of the wrestler I cheered hardest for. She is a good technical wrestler, who isn’t afraid of going to the top rope and pulling off some high risk aerial maneuver. I see her being the face of the Women’s division for a long time.
- The New Day (Xavier Woods, Big-E & Kofi Kingston)(Tag Team Champions)-Did you eat your “booty-o’s” this morning? There is no one more entertaining than this trio. And isn’t that what you want from wrestling, to be entertained? Sure, sometimes they come off as silly but all 3 are skilled and proven wrestlers in-ring. Out of the 3, I like Kofi the most due to his unbelievable athleticism. But I see Big-E being the breakout singles wrestler if the trio ever breaks up. Plus, with this pick you acquire 3 wrestlers instead of 1.
- Charlotte (Women’s Champion)-Having a hall-of-fame father, Ric Flair, certainly doesn’t hurt your stock. She is more than her father’s daughter, she is the most physically gifted woman in the entire company and, possibly, in WWE/WWF history. WWE doesn’t do intergender matches (I believe they should), but she would hold her own against most male wrestlers.
- A.J. Styles-He is a bit of an older wrestler, 39 years old, but has recently made his debut in WWE after spending most of his career with Ring of Honor, Total Nonstop Wrestling & New Japan Pro Wrestling. I don’t watch TNA because I think its hot garbage, (see: Final Deletion), but the few times my buddy had it on I was drawn to A.J. Styles. His skill level was so much higher than anyone else on the TNA roster. He was the big fish in a small pond. I’m glad he finally made his way to WWE because he is one helluva wrestler and has one of the best finishing moves. I don’t see Styles being in WWE long tern due to his age but for now he is a top level attraction.
- Finn Balor/Shinsuke Nakamura-I’m going to cheat a little and split this pick between my 2 favorite NXT wrestlers aka WWE’s minor league. Balor is a superb athlete, badass character and impressive wrestler all rolled into one. He will be the next NXT star to make the jump to the main roster and have an immediate impact. I’m not sure how much English Nakamura knows, but it doesn’t affect how great he is. The main thing I love about him is how expressive his face and body are. This sounds a little weird, but wrestling is an art form. Not all wrestlers need to be as charismatic on the mic like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to be effective and have long lasting careers. Some wrestlers can be just that, a great wrestler. I have previous experience with Nakamura because my buddy watches NJPW where everything is in Japanese, so I’m forced to hone in on the in-ring action and base my opinions on their wrestling skills alone. Nakamura may be an acquired taste, but I believe he will have a nice career within the WWE universe.
- Rusev with Lana (United States Champion)-I believe the Russian/Eastern European heel, who also hates America, is an integral character in a wrestling company. I’ll admit, at first I wasn’t a big fan of Rusev. I thought he was just some big, dumb oaf of a guy who was merely OK in the ring and on the mic, but over the past year he has really shown major improvement in both areas. To be an effective heel, one must be relish being hated for being a coward, which he has mastered. Oh yeah, Lana is an added bonus.
- Enzo Amore and Big Cass-These 2 are relatively new to the main roster, but have connected with the crowd almost instantaneously. Plus, they have the best entrance. Somehow Enzo is already one of the best talkers in the company and Big Cass is just a big MF’er who beats people up. Together, they have great chemistry and their individual styles work well together.
