Even though my last team had a few holes in it, I really liked most of my picks. Let’s see if I can recreate some of that magic. For this mock draft I will be selecting 6th out of 10.
Round 1 (6th Pick), Ezekiel Elliott (RB)-I’ve had awful luck picking rookie RB’s. Last season, I took Melvin Gordon with a high pick and damn, that was a bad choice. I was banking on him stepping into the starting role for a good San Diego offense and receive a high amount of carries. He ended up carrying the ball 184 times for 640 yards and a 3.5 yard per attempt average. The worst part was he finished the season with 0 TD’s. As a rookie, Elliott will have a much better season than Gordon. The biggest reason I believe this is the Cowboys have the best O-Line in the NFL. Jerry Jones has demonstrated a commitment to the running game by selection O-Line, and now, a RB high in the draft.
Round 2 (15th Pick), Le’Veon Bell (RB)-I’m not scared off by the 4-game suspension because I have a feeling he’s going to come back with a vengeance. If he wasn’t suspended, he would have been a top-3 pick.
Round (26th Pick), Alshon Jeffery (WR)-Health is the major key. In both of his full seasons, 2013 & 2014, he was an absolute monster. He had 80+ catches, 1100+ yards and 7+ TD’s. In 2015, he battled a lingering hamstring injury which eventually landed him on the injured reserve list. I see him having a resurgence in 2016 and should be back to his 2013/2014 numbers.
Round 4 (35th Pick), T.Y. Hilton (WR)-Drafting Andrew Luck’s favorite target was easy. I’m also a fan of his TD celebration.
Round 5 (46th Pick), Randall Cobb (WR)-Cobb had an outstanding 2014, and after Jordy Nelson was lost for the season, I expected him to explode in 2015 as Aaron Rodgers main offensive weapon. He did not. In fact, he put up noticeably worse numbers on almost the same amount of targets. I think it had something to do with opposing defenses spotlighting Cobb instead of having to worry about him and Nelson. Having Jordy back and healthy will only boost Cobb’s production.
Round 6 (55th Pick), Jeremy Langford (RB)-I’m nervous about this pick because the Chicago RB1 position is in flux with no real answer, although, Langford will receive the 1st crack at taking over the job on a permanent basis. His numbers weren’t all that impressive though. While he played in all 16 games, he only went over 70 yards 3 times. This is certainly a big gamble, especially with my other RB options but, with the lack of options for the Bears he will be tabbed as the starter.
Round 7 (66th Pick), Danny Woodhead (RB)-This is a pick I would have liked a lot better in a PPR league, as Woodhead is one of the premier pass-catching RB. I’m not thrilled with this selection. His weekly production fluctuates too much for me to trust him on a regular basis as a flex option.
Round 8 (75th Pick), Tom Brady (QB)-The value was too great to pass up. Brady has been a fantasy stalwart for years now. As with Le’Veon Bell, I have a feeling Brady will come back from his 4-game suspension and light the league up.
Round 9 (86th Pick), Josh Gordon (WR)-Gordon has all the talent in the world, as proved by his 2013 campaign, when he finished the season with 1646 yards on 87 receptions and 9 TD’s. The crazy part was he put up these numbers with a combination of Jason Campbell, Brandon Weeden and Brian Hoyer at QB! The problem being he missed the ENTIRE 2015 season due to a(nother) violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He has proved himself to be a selfish individual because he would rather get high or drunk instead of work hard, use his immense physical talents and help the Browns win games. I already had pretty good depth at WR, so I thought why not take a chance on an extremely talented dude. There is a chance, albeit a small one, he finally figures things out in his personal life so he can excel in his professional life.
Round 10 (95th Pick), Blake Bortles (QB)-After his dismal 2014, I thought Bortles wasn’t long for the NFL instead, he rebounded with an awfully good 2015. The emergence of the Allen Brothers, Allen Robinson & Allen Hurns, gave Bortles a solid WR pair to throw to. I really only need him for the 1st 4 Weeks of 2016, since I took Tom Brady earlier. My hope being he puts up good numbers in Weeks 1-4 so I can trade him when Tom Brady comes back.
Round 11 (106th Pick), Julius Thomas (TE)-TE is a position I don’t place much value in. I think it’s too hard to gauge, on a weekly-basis, how many targets a TE will be given. There is only one TE I place any value in and that would be Gronk. He’s the most physically gifted player to ever play that position and Belichick’s game-plan revolves around him. Not many other offense’s (if any) revolve their scheme around a TE. I just wait until a later round and select a guy with a high ceiling.
Round 12 (115th Pick), Charles Sims (RB)-I’m so-so on this pick. In a PPR league, I’m guessing Sims is a valuable asset but, in a regular league he just doesn’t receive enough of a workload to produce any meaningful points on a regular basis.
Round 13 (126th Pick), Jaelen Strong (WR)-I like the upside on this pick. DeAndre Hopkins is the opposite WR and he will garner the defenses attention, so Strong should have plenty of targets in 2016. Especially, now that Bill O’Brien has a legitimate QB in Brock Osweiler.
Round 14 (135th Pick), Jets (D/ST)-I love the Jets D-Line. The talent among that group is able to get pressure on opposing QB’s without having to send extra blitzers. More pressure means less time for a QB to find the open man, thus forcing him to make an ill-advised throw and (hopefully) resulting an in interception.
Round 15 (146th Pick), Jerick McKinnon (RB)-Being the backup to Adrian Peterson isn’t going to afford you much playing time but, it will teach you some valuable insight on what it takes to be an All-Pro RB. Someone on my Twitter timeline, sorry I forgot who, said whichever team signs McKinnon will be getting a helluva RB. I would like this pick a lot more if it was a keeper league.
Round 16 (155th Pick), Adam Vinatieri (K)-25 out of 27 made FG’s for a 43-year-old K is amazing. I think he could play into his 50’s if he decided to.
If I’m being completely honest I hate this team. I took far too many risks for my liking. Le’Veon Bell, Tom Brady and Josh Gordon are all suspended for the opening 4 weeks and the players I chose to start for those 4 weeks aren’t exactly great. My top selection, Ezekiel Elliott, is a rookie RB. While I have a ton of faith in the Cowboys O-Line and their ability to create holes for him. I’m always worried about relying on a rookie to put up consistent points. Jeremy Langford, I assume, will be the Week 1 starter for the Bears but he didn’t flash a whole lot of potential in 2015. I’m mostly worried about him because he never went over 85 yards during his rookie season. Danny Woodhead is a very good football player who is constantly moved around the field but does not receive a steady supply of carries or targets, thus limiting his fantasy potential. Charles Sims and Jerick McKinnon will only be called upon if an injury occurs on their respective teams. I’m really banking on Elliott having an all-time great rookie season and Bell coming back from suspension fit & ready to dominate. Wide Receiver is the strongest positional group on my faux team. Alshon Jeffery, T.Y. Hilton and Randall Cobb are all top-shelf WR’s with top-level QB’s throwing to them (OK, axe Jay Cutler from that list). These 3 should be good for massive production on a weekly basis. Josh Gordon has as much talent as the 3 WR’s previously mentioned. The only difference between them is they actually like to get paid for their production/talent, while Gordon likes to get high/drunk and, subsequently, suspended. He has shown the talent and capability to be a WR1 but currently lacks the mental discipline. I have a weird feeling that Robert Griffin III is going to have a resurgence in Cleveland under new Head Coach Hue Jackson. So if Gordon can just focus on football I can imagine him balling out in 2016. Jaelen Strong didn’t have the best rookie campaign but showing some flashes late in the season and, I believe, is primed for a breakout sophomore season, especially with Houston’s new QB Brock Osweiler. I don’t care about fantasy TE’s. I don’t ever seem to choose one who actually helps me, so I now just pick a random one late in the draft and pray they put up average numbers. The New York Jets finished tied for 3rd in takeaways with 30, just behind Arizona (33) and Carolina (39). Surprisingly, the Jets finished outside of the top-10 in sacks but, having the threesome of Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams will certainly afford them the opportunity to break into the top-10. I hope Adam Vinatieri never retires. Kickers, just like Goalkeepers, seem to not age and can play well into their 40’s. Let me reiterate, I HATE THIS TEAM, and am glad this was a mock draft.
